PIDA’s water sector focuses on improving the management and development of Africa’s transboundary water resources to support food security, economic growth, and climate resilience. Projects like the Lesotho Highlands Water Project have enhanced water distribution, while others, such as the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System and Cubango-Okavango basin, are building regional cooperation in water management. Despite progress, funding for water infrastructure remains below the annual target of USD 30 billion, with initiatives like the Continental Africa Water Investment Programme (AIP) aimed at mobilizing investments to meet this goal and accelerate water access and sustainability across Africa.
The transport sector under PIDA focuses on improving Africa’s road, rail, aviation, and maritime infrastructure to facilitate the movement of people and goods across borders. By developing transnational transport corridors, PIDA aims to reduce transport costs, enhance regional integration, and promote intra-Africa trade. This sector is crucial for improving access to markets, boosting regional economies, and unlocking the continent’s full trade potential. Since PIDA’s inception, 16,066 km of road and 4,077 km of railway lines have been developed, with 120 One-Stop Border Posts (OSBPs) planned or implemented to connect cross-border infrastructure.
The energy sector under PIDA addresses Africa’s challenges in low generation capacity, high costs, and unstable energy supplies. Through the African Continental Power Systems Master Plan (CMP) and the African Single Electricity Market (AfSEM), PIDA supports the development of regional power grids and renewable energy projects like hydro, solar, and wind to provide reliable and affordable electricity. To date, 3,506 km of transmission lines have been developed, delivering 232 GW of electricity, and hydroelectricity capacity has reached 7 GW. PIDA’s energy initiatives are critical to powering industries, supporting economic development, and enhancing energy access across the continent.
The ICT sector under PIDA plays a vital role in Africa’s digital transformation by improving connectivity and supporting economic growth in sectors such as e-commerce and fintech. PIDA aims to increase digital infrastructure by expanding high-speed internet access and modernizing telecommunications networks across the continent. Currently, 17 African countries have achieved digital connectivity through optical fibre cables, with ICT capacity reaching 9 Terabits. As part of its
efforts, PIDA has established the AU Convention on Cyber Security and Personal Data Protection (AUCC), which provides a framework for secure electronic transactions, data protection, and combating cybercrime, ensuring Africa’s digital future is both secure and resilient.
