Print this page
Program description:

This programme would modernize and rehabilitate the multimodal corridor that suffered during civil war in Côte d’Ivoire.

Program background:

The modernisation of this West African multimodal corridor will benefit three Economic Community of West African States countries, Cote d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso and Mali, and will lead to better regional trade. The SociétéInternationale de Transport Africain par Rail has a concession on the rail network between Cote d’ Ivoire and Burkina Faso, and will also play a role in the implementation of this project.

Expected Results:

The project will simplify the crossing of borders by people and goods, which will lead to increased regional trade and cost savings. The improved efficiency of the transport system will in turn speed up regional integration.

Some sections of this programme are already being implemented under national projects and a corridor management committee was recently established. A comprehensive, centralised database of ongoing projects and the norms and standards of the programme will be established as the next step. Financing has been obtained from various donors, and a public-private partnership is intended for this project.

Technical Information:

The project entails the modernisation of this West African corridor and the roll-out of four smart corridor modules. It includes the upgrading of 500 kilometres of highway, the modernisation of a 1 200 kilometre stretch of existing railway line and the construction of two one-stop border posts.
